Commercial Rekeying in Cameron

Two people left over the summer and the keys they handed back came up one short. Nobody is sure whether the missing key was for the front door, the stockroom or both, and the sign-out sheet stopped being filled in a year ago.

In plain words

A business hands out keys as people join and rarely gets every one back as people leave. Rekeying resets that count. Instead of guessing how many copies of the front-door key exist, the cylinders are repinned so only the newly cut set works, and those keys are numbered and signed for. Where turnover is steady, the locksmith can fit interchangeable cores, which let a manager swap a core with a control key in a couple of minutes when someone departs, so the reset becomes routine rather than an event. Either way you end up with a premises where the keyholder list matches the staff list.

Sound familiar?

A key turned up in the parking lot with the shop's name on its fob. It came back to you, which is lucky, but it means keys are leaving the building on rings you have never seen, and the shop's locks have not changed since opening day.

How the visit goes

  1. 1

    Which doors are the landlord's

In a plaza, an office building or a multi-tenant industrial unit, some doors on your floor plan are not yours to rekey. Corridor doors, electrical and mechanical rooms, shared loading doors and the building's fire exits usually sit on the landlord's master system, and a suite entrance may be required to accept the landlord's key as well as yours. The locksmith sorts the openings into two columns before starting: those the lease puts under your control, which get the new plan, and those that stay as they are or need the property manager's say-so. Where a suite door must accept both a tenant key and the building master, it is pinned to do exactly that.

  2. 2

    Storefront and mortise cylinders

Aluminum storefront doors carry a threaded mortise cylinder held by a small set screw in the door edge. The locksmith loosens the screw, spins the cylinder out, repins it, and threads it back to the same depth so the cam engages the deadbolt or hook bolt behind it and nothing else. Mortise locks in older office doors work on the same principle with a heavier lock body. On both, the depth and cam type matter as much as the pinning: a cylinder a turn too far in or a cam of the wrong shape will feel right in the hand but fail to throw the bolt, so each is cycled open and closed.

  3. 3

Exits that still open the way they must

Rekeying changes who can come in; it never changes how people get out. Every exit door and every door on the way to one is left opening from the inside with a single motion and no key. On a door with a panic bar, the outside cylinder simply controls entry, and the bar keeps working exactly as before. Once the locksmith has finished, walk the exit routes yourself, push each bar and turn each thumb-turn, and make that walk a habit at the start of every season so a new deadbolt or a helpful padlock never creeps onto an exit.

What affects the quote

  1. 1

    Doors out of alignment

A door whose cam, strike or closer needs adjusting so the freshly rekeyed cylinder throws the bolt fully is corrected during the visit, and that adjustment is a separate item.

  2. 2

    Cylinders that need replacing

Where a worn, corroded or low-grade cylinder is better replaced than repinned, the new part is added for that door alone, and the locksmith points it out before the work begins.

  3. 3

    A master key plan

Pinning cylinders to accept both a change key and a master, and designing the chart so no key opens a door it should not, is more work per cylinder than keying everything alike.

Commercial Rekeying: questions

Advice · (249) 488-0915

Can padlocks, cabinets and the mailbox go on the plan too?

Yes. Gate, cage and shutter padlocks that accept repinning can share the back-door key, and the locks on filing cabinets, drawers and display cases can be grouped so the people who work at them carry a single key while the manager holds a separate one. Mailbox cylinders are small and are usually swapped for new rather than repinned. Everything is entered on the chart, so one document covers the whole premises.

Can all our doors be put on a single key?

Yes, if the cylinders share a keyway or can be fitted with ones that do. Keying everything alike is popular with small shops because staff carry one key and spares are simple. The trade-off is that one key then opens the cash room as readily as the front door. Many businesses choose a middle path: the doors everyone uses on one key, the sensitive rooms on another, and an owner's master that opens both.

What information should I have ready before the locksmith arrives?

A list of the doors and other locks you want included, a copy of the lease or the property manager's contact, every existing key you can find, and a rough idea of who needs to open what. Note which doors, if any, are interchangeable cores and where the control key is. Knowing your quiet hours and who opens up in the morning helps the locksmith plan the order of work and the key handover.

What the census means at the door

56%

Older homes. About 56% of homes in Kawartha Lakes were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Basement and side entries on older homes were often fitted long after the house was built, with whatever lock was on hand. Bringing those doors up to the standard of the front entry, and onto the same key, is a common and satisfying job.

84%

Mostly houses. Single-detached houses make up about 84% of homes in Kawartha Lakes (2021 Census).

In areas of single houses, the door nobody watches is the side or back entry. It often has the weakest lock on the property. Fitting a proper deadbolt and a reinforced strike there is a modest job that closes the obvious gap.
