Locked out

Safely, right now

  1. Stay somewhere warm and safe while you wait, such as a neighbour's or your car.
  2. Don't break a window or pry the door. It adds damage without getting you in sooner.
  3. Have a photo ID with your address ready if you can.

Key broke in the lock

Safely, right now

  1. Don't push the broken piece back in or try the lock again.
  2. Hold on to the half you have; it helps with a new key.

Lock won't turn

Safely, right now

  1. Stop turning hard: a key that bends or snaps makes the job bigger.
  2. Skip the oil, the glue and the hot water. They make it worse.

A small apartment building, a clinic with six rooms, a shop with a back office: each in Kennedy Bay benefits from one key that opens everything and individual keys that open only what they should. We design the system, pin the cylinders, and record who holds which key so it stays manageable. Nearby, we also work in Daytonia Beach, Dunsford, Long Beach, Pleasant Point and Sturgeon Point.

The fix, explained · Kennedy Bay

What is the door doing?

EmergencyHome Lockout ServiceYou reached the front step with the groceries, patted every pocket twice, and the house key is simply not there.

The fix

Different locks call for different openings, and a lockout visit starts by reading the hardware on your door. A spring latch in a knob or lever behaves differently from a deadbolt, a mortise lock in an older home has its own internals, and a high-security cylinder resists shortcuts that work on builder-grade hardware.

EmergencyBusiness Lockout ServiceYou signed the lease on the unit last week and the landlord handed over possession, but the previous tenant's locks are still on both doors and no…

The fix

Commercial doors carry hardware that most homes never see, and reading it correctly is the first skill of a business lockout. An aluminium storefront door usually has a narrow mortise cylinder driving a hookbolt deadlock or a paddle-operated deadlatch.

EmergencyBroken Key ExtractionThat key had been bending a little for years, and you kept straightening it.

The fix

Broken key extraction is the removal of a snapped key piece from a lock so it can go back to work. It is done with slim hooks and spiral extractors that slide into the keyway beside the fragment, catch the cuts in the blade and draw it out the way it went in.

EmergencyBreak-In Damage Lock RepairThere is a hole where the cylinder used to be.

The fix

A failed break-in is still a repair. When a lock holds against a pry bar or a kick, the force goes somewhere: a strike plate bends, screws loosen, the door edge takes a gouge, the deadbolt binds where the bolt met the strike under load.

EmergencySeized & Jammed Lock OpeningThe key turns a full circle without any resistance and the deadbolt stays exactly where it is.

The fix

The visit runs in a set order. On the phone you describe what the key does: refuses to turn, spins freely, or works only when the door is pushed.

The fix

When a key disappears, cutting yourself another copy solves the wrong half of the problem. You can get in again, but so can whoever finds the original.

A lockout in Kennedy Bay is handled without drama. The locksmith confirms you belong there, then uses the least destructive method the lock allows, so the door and cylinder are usually intact when you walk through. Only when a lock has genuinely failed does he move to drilling, and then he replaces the cylinder and hands you fresh keys before leaving.

  • No surprises on the doorstep. What we described on the phone is what we plan to do. If the door tells us something different when we see it, we stop and talk before going further.

  • Helping you choose well. Hardware ranges from basic to heavy-duty and simple to electronic. We explain the differences that actually matter for your door and leave the choice with you.

  • Neat work, neatly finished. Holes drilled cleanly, hardware aligned, nothing crooked or forced. A lock should look like it belongs on the door, and we take the time to make sure it does.

The key slides in and turns all the way round, but the bolt stays put. There is no click, no resistance, just a key spinning in a lock that has stopped listening to it after years of daily use.

After last night's power flicker the card reader beside the clinic door shows nothing. Fobs do nothing, the electric strike stays locked, and the small brass override key that came with the system is in a desk drawer on the far side of the door.

The key still turns, but lately it spins a half-circle further than it used to before the little door lets go, and some mornings it takes a second try. The small cam lock inside is simply worn out.

A break-in overnight took the cash float and a staff member's bag with her work keys inside it. The glass is being replaced this morning, but the key that opened the door yesterday will still open it tonight unless the cylinders are changed.

The paperwork for the used car changed hands last week, and the previous owner mentioned, almost as an afterthought, that a second key never turned up. One worn blade on a single ring is now the entire access system for the vehicle.

Your key turns smoothly in the driver's door, the same as it always has, but the button underneath stays down and the latch never releases. The passenger side opens without any trouble, so the key itself is clearly not the source of the trouble.

You dig through every jacket pocket and the tank bag twice, but the ignition key that always sits on the same ring is nowhere to be found. The bike sits exactly where you parked it, and nothing in reach will turn that lock.

What the census means at the door

56%

Older homes. About 56% of homes in Kawartha Lakes were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Older homes tend to have had many hands on their doors: owners, tenants, tradespeople, family. A locksmith visiting such a house pays attention to who holds keys now, and rekeying or a keyed-alike set often matters more than any new hardware.

84%

Mostly houses. Single-detached houses make up about 84% of homes in Kawartha Lakes (2021 Census).

Detached homes are exposed to weather on every side, so exterior locks see rain, salt and freezing air directly. Choosing hardware with a good finish and a cylinder that tolerates cold, then lubricating it properly, keeps every door turning through winter.

Asked and answered

Advice · (249) 488-0915

My key turns but the door stays locked. What is going on?

A key that spins freely without moving the bolt usually means the connection between the cylinder and the bolt has failed: the tailpiece or cam at the back of the cylinder has broken or slipped, or the internal parts of an older mortise lock have worn. The good news is that this is a hardware fault rather than a lost key, so once the door is opened the fix is a repaired or replaced cylinder and your keys keep working.

I am an employee, not the owner. Can you still open the door for me?

Yes, with the owner or a manager in the loop. Tell the locksmith who can confirm you work there and how to reach them. A call to the business owner, the regional manager or the property manager, ideally on a number that can be looked up rather than one you supply, settles it. Staff on an opening shift arrange this on the phone before the locksmith arrives so nothing waits at the door.

What if my mailbox key snapped off inside the lock?

The broken piece is removed first, using extraction tools that grip and draw it out rather than push it further in, and then the lock is opened the usual way. A key rarely snaps in a lock that is otherwise healthy, so the old cylinder is checked afterward, and if wear caused the break, replacement rather than a repeated repair is the sensible next step.

Can the combination or code be changed after installation?

Yes, on both mechanical and electronic locks. A mechanical dial is reset to a new combination by working inside the lock body, while an electronic keypad is simply reprogrammed at the keypad or through its service menu. Changing it after a change in staff, a move, or simply out of caution is routine work rather than anything unusual, and it can be arranged as its own visit.
