Seized & Jammed Lock Opening in Kawartha Lakes

The key turns a full circle without any resistance and the deadbolt stays exactly where it is. There is no click, nothing moves behind the face of the lock, and the door is as closed as it was before you touched it.

In plain words

Most seized locks can be saved, and keeping your existing hardware is the aim. A cylinder that has stopped turning is usually recoverable with cleaning and fresh internal parts. A failed tailpiece is a small component swapped without touching the rest of the lock. A bolt bound by the door needs adjustment, not new hardware. Replacement is the answer for a plug or shell that is worn, damaged or hollowed out by corrosion beyond what cleaning and parts can fix, and then the new cylinder is matched to your keyway and finish and, where possible, keyed to the key already in your pocket.

Sound familiar?

Every time you pull the key out of the side door it comes away gritty. The lock has been sticky since the salt trucks started running, and today it has gone from sticky to solid, with the bolt still thrown.

How the visit goes

  1. 1

    Whose door, and which door

The first check is the person, not the lock. The locksmith confirms that whoever is asking for the opening is entitled to it, usually with photo identification that matches the address, or a lease, deed, property-management record or a manager who can vouch for you. For a business, a key holder or the person named on the lease is enough. If everything that proves it is behind the jammed door, the check is finished once you are inside and before the locksmith leaves. Then a short walk to the other entrances: a second door on the same key gives a comparison lock and sometimes a gentler way in.

  2. 2

When corrosion has taken the core

Occasionally the plug or shell has rusted or pitted past the point of cleaning, or an earlier forcing has twisted the plug in the shell. Then the cylinder is replaced rather than rebuilt. The locksmith matches the keyway and finish so the new part looks like the old one, and where the keyway allows, pins the new cylinder to the key already on your ring so nothing else in the house changes. If the whole lockset is tired, a replacement deadbolt or lever set goes on in the same visit, with the strike checked to suit it. The old parts are handed over so you can see exactly what failed.

  3. 3

Keeping the cylinder clean and dry

A serviced cylinder stays that way with very little effort. At the interval and with the product that cylinder's maker specifies, a short burst of lock lubricant into the keyway followed by a few turns of the key is enough; stay with that one product, since mixing lubricants makes a paste. Household oils, penetrating sprays and silicone meant for hinges belong nowhere near the pins, because they thicken and attract grit. Wipe the key before it goes in on a muddy or salty day. If the lock ever starts to drag, a puff of lubricant is the first response, and a call is the second.

What affects the quote

  1. 1

    Which part is jammed

A bolt pinned by the door, a cylinder clogged with grit and a broken tailpiece are three different jobs with three different amounts of work, and the quote follows the diagnosis rather than the symptom.

  2. 2

    Small parts behind the cylinder

Tailpieces, cams, springs, cylinder caps and pins are minor items, but each one used is named on the quote so you can see what went into the lock.

  3. 3

    Service or replace the cylinder

A cylinder that can be stripped, cleaned and rebuilt is quoted as labour with a few small parts; one corroded through is quoted with a replacement cylinder matched to your finish and keyway.

Seized & Jammed Lock Opening: questions

Advice · (249) 488-0915

The lever on our shop door goes down but the latch does not pull back. Is that a lock problem?

It usually points to the mortise case rather than the cylinder, and it is a common complaint on commercial doors. Inside the case a return spring, a worn hub, or another part of the latch's drive path can have failed, so the lever moves without driving the latch. The locksmith gets the door open, draws the case out of the door edge, replaces the worn part, cleans and greases the contact points and refits everything, then tests lever, key and thumb-turn together.

Could a jammed lock mean someone tampered with it?

Occasionally, but wear and weather are far more common. Signs that point to tampering are fresh scratches around the keyway, a plug that sits crooked, or debris such as glue or a broken tool tip inside, none of which appear from ordinary use. The locksmith looks for these during the inspection and says plainly what was found. If the cylinder has been damaged that way, it is replaced and, if you wish, the other doors are rekeyed.

How do I stop this from happening again?

Three habits cover most of it. Lubricate the cylinder with a dry lock product twice a year and keep oils out of it. Check that the door locks with no pressure on it each spring and fall, snugging hinge and strike screws when it starts to drag. Keep a lock de-icer handy and fit a keyhole cover on exposed doors. And act on the first stiff turn, because a lock that still turns is a smaller job than one that has stopped.

What the census means at the door

56%

Older homes. About 56% of homes in Kawartha Lakes were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Where housing is mostly older, many entries still have only a knob lock and no deadbolt at all. Adding one is a straightforward job on a solid wood door, and it is the single upgrade that changes most for a house of this kind.

84%

Mostly houses. Single-detached houses make up about 84% of homes in Kawartha Lakes (2021 Census).

Homeowners in houses often want a spare key that lives outside safely. A locksmith can fit a proper key safe or set up a keypad so a hidden key under a pot is no longer part of the plan.
